The shoes can turn smelly and dirty. Whether the stink is coming from feet or the shoes, you can easily now remove bad odor from it. When cleaning the shoes, the main aim is to kill the bacteria which is growing and causes the foul smell. 

This can be done in various ways. 

Washing your shoes

If the shoes can be washed, then follow the below-mentioned steps. 

Things you need: 

  • Washing machine
  • Detergent
  • Pillow Case
  • Bleach (optional)

Process of cleaning

  • Remove the soles and shoestrings, from your shoes
  • Place your shoes in a pillowcase. 
  • Place your pillowcase in the washing machine. 
  • Run your shoes through a normal cycle in your washing using hot water and add some detergent. If the shoes are white, you can also add some bleach. 

If the smell is very strong, you can run two or more cycles for getting rid of the bad odor. 

Vinegar and Baking soda for removing the odor 

Things you need

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda

Cleaning process

  • Start by filling your shoe with 1 cup of baking soda. ( Take less baking soda for smaller shoes)
  • Add 1 cup of vinegar. This can cause fizzing and bubbling. 
  • Let this set & work in shoes for long 15 minutes. 
  • Remove the mixture from shoes, rinse & simply wash. 

How to remove the stink from shoes using bleach?

Things you need

  • Bleach
  • Water 
  • Tea Kettle

Cleaning process

  • Start by filling the kettle with some water and bring the same on a boil. 
  • Set the shoes in the sink or on the clean surface outside. 
  • Fill every shoe with some boiling water and add some amount of bleach. 
  • Let this mixture stay for at least 10 minutes. 
  • When the water has cooled down, throw the water and simply wash them. This bleach will help in killing the bacteria, and also helps in removing bad odor from the shoes. 

How to remove the stink from non-washable shoes

Any shoes which are glued or sewn must avoid excess water as its glue can turn loose. Try some handy tricks as mentioned below:

  • Wipe out the shoe's external fiber with a cotton ball using alcohol for killing bacteria. It is the bacteria only which causes the shoes to stink.
  • You can also use a bowling shoe disinfectant for removing the odor. Spray some of its amounts liberally and let your shoes dry completely. 
  • The Lysol disinfectant spray can also be helpful as it helps in bacteria removal. You can spray inside the shoes and let them dry. 

How to use inserts for removing odor from shoes

You can find various odor absorbers that you can place in the shoes when you are not wearing them. This helps in keeping the odor under the control.

  • Baking soda
  • Fabric softener sheets
  • Salt
  • Coffee grounds

Cleaning process

  • Start by washing your shoes.
