5 Easy Ways To Turn Any Shoes Into Non-Slip Shoes

5 Easy Ways To Turn Any Shoes Into Non-Slip Shoes

Turning any shoes into non-slip ones is much easier than most people think. There are dozens of ways to do this, and we've tried all of them.

Out of all the methods, we think five are the simplest, as anyone can do them.

So, what are they?

Well, the five easy ways to turn any shoes into non-slip shoes are:

  • Scuffing the soles
  • Using a non-slip spray
  • Attaching a grip pad
  • Using sandpaper
  • Applying puff paint
  • Keep reading as we're explaining each method step-by-step here. You will only have to "read" the instructions and "follow" them. Let's start!

5 Easy Ways To Turn Any Shoes Into Non-Slip Shoes

5 Easy Ways To Turn Any Shoes Into Non-Slip Shoes

As mentioned above, we have tried every method to turn a shoe into a non-slip. Most of them are complicated. But worry not; five of them are super easy.

    Way #01: Scuff the Soles

The “Scuffing method” is our first choice because you don't need any fancy items to do this method. In fact, you don't even have to spend any money to do this.

    Here are the simple steps:

    Step 1: Choose Your Surface

Start by finding a rough surface near you. We suggest:

  • Concrete pavements
  • A gritty, textured sidewalk.
  • In our experience, these surfaces are ideal for scuffing because of their abrasive nature.

    Step 2: Do the Scuffing

Now, wear your shoes and start scuffing. The goal here is to create small abrasions on the smooth soles.

This is how we do it: place your foot on the ground, then drag it slightly against the surface.

Keep doing this for a few minutes, but don't overdo it.

    Step 3: Check Your Progress

Next, check the soles after a few minutes of scuffing. You should notice a difference in the texture. You can even touch the sole to confirm whether it's more rugged.

This change in texture is what will give you that extra grip.

    Step 4: Repeat if Necessary

If you feel the soles are still smooth, don't hesitate to repeat the process. We've noted that newer shoes take a bit longer to achieve that non-slip texture.

If you're uncomfortable doing this yourself, we suggest seeking professional help.

    Way #02: Use a Non-Slip Spray

Many companies have launched non-slip sprays that can turn any shoes into non-slip in no time. The best thing about them is that they are cheap and can get the job done easily.

    Here's what to do:

Step 1: Select the Right Spray

The first step is picking the right non-slip spray. You can find a lot of sprays in the market, but we recommend choosing one that's specifically designed for shoes.

Why? Because these sprays are formulated to improve traction without damaging the material of your shoes.

    Step 2: Clean the Soles

It's crucial to clean the soles of your shoes before you apply the spray. The reason is that the dirt and debris can reduce the effectiveness of the spray.

You can simply wipe the soles with a damp cloth. Most people think that’s enough, but we also advise you to dry the soles with another cloth.

    Step 3: Apply the Spray

Now, you can finally apply the non-slip spray. But before this, you should put the shoes in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. It’s crucial to avoid inhaling fumes (which can be hazardous for your health).

Let us also tell you here that how you apply the spray also matters.

According to the experts, you will get the best results if you hold the spray about 6 inches away from the soles and apply it evenly. Be sure to cover the entire sole, but avoid over-spraying (as it can make the soles too sticky).

    Step 4: Let it Dry

After applying the spray, let the shoes sit and dry. How much time you should give is usually mentioned on the spray bottle. In most cases, this is usually around 24 hours.

It's important not to rush this process, as the spray needs time to fully work.

    Step 5: Test Them Out

Once the soles are dry, it's time to test your shoes. We suggest doing this cautiously at first to ensure the spray has worked effectively. You should feel a noticeable difference in the grip.

Safety Note: Remember that the effects of non-slip sprays are not permanent. The coating will wear off over time, so you'll need to reapply it.

5 Easy Ways To Turn Any Shoes Into Non-Slip Shoes

    Way #03: Attach Grip Pads

Another way to turn any shoes into non-slips is by attaching the grip pads. It's really easy to do, but let us warn you that grip pads will eventually wear down. So, you will have to replace them after every few weeks.

Step 1: Selecting the Right Grip Pads

The first step is to find suitable grip pads. You will get a lot of options, like:

  • Rubber
  • Plastic
  • Self-adhesive options.
  • We suggest picking those pads that are compatible with your shoe type. In our opinion, thinner, more discreet pads work best for dress shoes. For casual or athletic shoes, you should opt for something more robust.

    Step 2: Clean the Soles

After choosing the pad, the next thing to do is to ensure the soles of your shoes are clean and dry. Note that any dirt or moisture can hinder the adhesive's effectiveness.

Here's what to do in this step: Wipe with a damp cloth and then clean with a dry towel.

    Step 3: Position the Pads

Now, you can finally position the pads. Most grip pads are designed to fit the heel or the ball of the foot area.

Our suggestion: You should place the pad on the sole to find out the best position. Remember not to remove the adhesive backing during this step.

    Step 4: Apply the Pads

After deciding on the position, you can then peel off the adhesive backing. Then, carefully place the pad onto the sole and press firmly for a few seconds. Doing this will ensure a strong bond.

Tip: We recommend doing this one shoe at a time to maintain precision.

After this, give your shoes some time. We suggest waiting at least a few hours before wearing the shoes. Letting them sit overnight is ideal.

    Step 5: Test Your Shoes

Finally, it's time to test your shoes. We always suggest walking around on different surfaces to ensure the pads are secure. If they are, you can wear your shoes without any worries.

    Way #04: Use Sandpaper

Sandpapers can also improve the shoes' grip and turn them into non-slips. Just do these steps:

Step 1: Choose the Right Sandpaper

Start by picking the appropriate sandpaper. We recommend using medium-grit sandpaper, something around 50-100 grit.

    Step 2: Sanding the Soles

After getting the sandpaper, hold it firmly and rub it against the sole. You can use steady, back-and-forth motions.

Moreover, in this step, we always recommend making extra effort on the heel and the ball of the foot. It’s because these parts make walking easy.

    Step 3: Check Your Progress

After a few minutes of sanding, pause to check the texture of the sole. The previously smooth areas should now feel rougher and more textured. This added roughness will provide extra grip.

    Step 4: Clean Up

When you're happy with the sole texture, the next thing to do is to clean off any sandpaper residue. You can either use a simple brush-off or a damp cloth for this.

After doing the above steps, we suggest testing your shoes on a slippery surface after sanding.

    That's it!

    Way #05: Apply Puff Paint

The last method to turn shoes into non-slip we have for you is "Puff Paint." It's not a common one, but we've found great results.

    Here's the full process:

Step 1: Select Your Puff Paint

Start by getting a puff of paint. This is the same kind used for fabric crafts. Don't worry; you can easily find them at craft stores.

The most important thing in this step is that you should choose a color that matches your shoe. If you're unsure, just get a clear paint for a more discreet look.

    Step 2: Clean the Soles

After purchasing the puff paint, the next step is cleaning your shoe (especially the sole). You can use a damp cloth/towel for this purpose.

After cleaning the sole, think about where your shoes need the most grip. Typically, it's the heel and the ball of the foot. We like to mark these areas lightly with a pencil.

    Step 3: Apply the Paint

Now, in this step, gently squeeze the puff paint onto the marked areas of the sole. You don't need a lot – just a few dots or lines. The idea is to create raised, textured spots that will provide extra traction.

    Step 4: Let It Dry

Next, let the paint dry completely, which might take a few hours. During this time, you should avoid touching the paint or wearing shoes.

When you're sure the paint is dry, you can finally test your shoes. Walk on different surfaces to check the improved grip. If you think the shoes are still slippery, then repeat the process.

That's all about how to turn any shoes into non-slip shoes!
