Having the tongue of your shoes slide from side to side can be one of the most frustrating things, especially when you are out in a public place. While it takes barely a few seconds to pull it back to its usual form, it hardly lasts a couple minutes before you notice it has slid to the side again. This makes me wonder, how can we keep the shoe tongue in place?
Most shoes have a loop on the tongue of their shoelaces that prevent the unsolicited movement of the tongue. However, this might be ineffective for some shoes. In this situation, you can simply loop the laces of your shoes in a backward direction. This will allow the tongue to stay intact and prevent it from moving.
Since the majority of the shoes have a loop on the tongue, you can expect to get going on about your day after spending a couple of minutes re-lacing them. But, in case this does not work, I will be sharing a few handy tips that can help you keep your shoe tongue just where it is supposed to be. So, keep reading.
How to Keep Your Shoe Tongue in Place and Stop It from Sliding
Quite evidently, sneakers have become an essential part of the trending fashion these days. Most people opt for wearing sneakers even on occasions and in places that were previously unheard of, such as the beach.
However, no matter where sneakers are worn, most people often complain about one thing, and that is that they experience the sliding of the tongue from one side to another. This is especially common while running.
The trick is to keep the tongue of your shoe at the right place, but the question is “How?”
If you have experienced a similar problem, you are in the right place, as I will be sharing a few simple tips and tricks on how you should be tying your sneaker’s tongue perfectly to stop it from slipping to the side.
Check the tongue to see if there is a loop
Most types of footwear have a tongue loop, mainly because it is an integral part of all shoes. Simply, take one of the shoes and untie the shoelaces so that all the portions of the shoe tongue become visible.
Next, search for a fabric loop (roughly about 0.5-1 inches) in the center of the shoe tongue. If you notice one, this loop can be used to hold the shoe tongue up and prevent it from moving or slipping to the side.
Though not very common, instead of a fabric loop, a few shoes come with vertical slits that are cut into the tongue. These slits can be used in the same way as you use a tongue loop.
This technique works well on shoes with lace patterns, provided the laces intersect at an angle. Suffice to say, this works well with all kinds of shoelace patterns except with the parallel bars.
Note: You should be able to find a tongue loop on the shoelaces in the majority of the shoes. This loop is mainly crafted to keep the tongue from shifting unnecessarily. While this usually works for most shoes, it might not work as effectively for many others.
Under these circumstances, you can simply loop the shoelaces in a backward direction. This will allow the tongue to stay intact and prevent it from sliding sideways. However, even if there is no loop on the tongue, it is relatively easy to just stitch one and solve the problem.
Untie the shoe laces down to the row of eye holes underneath the loops
Start your way from the top of the shoe and then gradually loosen the laces by pulling them through the holes. Remove the laces from each row of the eyelets till you reach the set of holes that are just underneath the tongue loop.
If the laces are not leveled, they can often result in uneven pressure on the tongue, causing it to slide sideways. Hence, you must ensure both sides of the laces are equal in length before moving forward. So, if you have uneven laces then untie them completely and lace them again.
Slide the shoelaces across the loop on the tongue
Based on how much space is available in the loop, you might have to thread a shoelace beneath the other so that they can stay on top of each other. For this, you will need to pull the laces completely to avoid unwanted slack.
Tip: Avoid sliding each lace through the hole on the other side.
Pull each lace across the eyehole on the same side
Now, you just have to pick up each end of the lace and pull it back to the eyehole on the same side it starts from. Once this is done for each end of the lace, there is only one step remaining.
Put the remaining shoelace in the same way as usual
Now you can simply proceed with your standard lacing pattern and re-lace the remaining parts in the same way they are laced underneath the tongue loop.
For instance, if you prefer the conventional crisscross pattern, keep swapping the shoelaces atop one another until you reach the upper eyeholes.
On the contrary, you can use any lacing pattern, provided the laces are crossing each other as they move upwards to the shoes’ top.
At first, you might think it is complicated to learn how to keep your shoe tongue in place. However, you can rest assured you can do it in no time as you start doing it more frequently. This is the easiest and perfect way to keep the shoe tongue secure on your shoes. Moreover, it also works for all your custom sneakers, and slip-on shoes.

But, according to Ning, it is recommended to put the eyelet on the same side you began putting the laces, such that it creates a backward loop. Ultimately, it is important to follow the same technique for both sides of the lace before knotting it up.
